Having the Same Doctor Halves Chance of Early Death

The studies were from nine countries with very different cultures and health systems, but the team found that 18 out of the 22 studies showed that with continuous care with the same doctor over time, there was a lower death rate among patients.

Eighteen of the studies indicated that contact with the same doctor over an average of two years meant fewer deaths over the periods studied, compared with other patients.

The lead author of the study, Sir Denis Pereira Gray, stated that patients have always been aware of the importance of which doctor they see and how well they communicate with the healthcare professional.

This path-breaking finding crossed cultural barriers, and included all levels of specialized care, such as psychiatric and surgical specialists, and not just family physicians.

"Now, it is clear it is about the quality of medical practice and is literally "a matter of life and death".

"Patients talk more freely to doctors they know, and doctors can then understand them better and tailor advice and treatment better", he said.

With the NHS providing the vast majority of United Kingdom healthcare, continuity of medical treatment is something tackled at both a national and local policy level, as well as by individual doctors' practices.

"The intangible aspect of knowing your patients, knowing their history, knowing their quirks, and knowing who they are can help predict outcomes and help you intervene", said Siegel, who wasn't part of the study.

Seeing the same doctor each time you need medical care might reduce your risk of death, research suggests.

In a study conducted last month by the University of Leicester, only half of the patients had a preferred doctor and only half of them were able to visit the same doctor for the majority of their appointments.

Professor Philip Evans, of the University of Exeter Medical School, said: "Continuity of care happens when a patient and a doctor see each other repeatedly and get to know each other". "Less face time is disadvantageous", Siegel said.

Many health experts have stressed the importance of providing continued care for patients in the past.

That's why it's important to find what has been called a "medical home".

Knowing you well also helps a primary care doctor refer you to the ideal specialist when needed. To improve access to patients and availability of appointments, we're investing an extra £2.4 billion a year into general practice by 2021 and have a number of schemes in place to recruit and retain more doctors'.

The results can be found published online in the journal BMJ Open.
