New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern in labour with first child

New Zealand's prime minister has arrived at the hospital to have her first child.

Ms Ardern took office as New Zealand's third female prime minister previous year and announced in January she was expecting a baby with her partner, television fishing show presenter Clarke Gayford. They arrived at 5.50am.

Peters has now started his role as acting prime minister for the next six weeks.

Winston Peters, the deputy prime minister, is now acting prime minister.

She's expected to briefly speak to reporters after the birth.

"It's a happy day and on behalf of the coalition government we wish her and Clarke all the very best".

Shaw was referring to the fact this will be the first time a Prime Minister in New Zealand has had a baby while in power.

The Green Party co-leaders have send their best wishes, saying it is historic moment for the country.

The 37-year-old, who was elected in October, announced her pregnancy in January via Instagram.

Last Monday, Ms Ardern was advised not to fly any more and since then had been working from home in Auckland, rather than travelling to Wellington.

Asked earlier this month how the couple had been faring while trying to choose a name, Ardern responded: "Terribly".

Auckland District Hospital declined to comment.
