Dreamworld Inquest Hears Ride Failed Twice In Hours Before Fatal Accident

The inquest has been told it was very noisy working in the unloading section of the Thunder River Rapids Ride and clear sight between workers was hard.

Ms Goodchild's 12-year-old daughter and Ms Low's 10-year-old son survived the incident despite also being thrown out of the raft.

The court heard the ride had a long history of malfunctions, including an incident in January 2001 where several empty rafts collided and flipped over during a dry run before the facility was opened to the public.

The coronial inquest into the 2016 malfunction of Dreamworld's Thunder River Rapids ride has begun, as authorities work to determine what caused the mechanical error which lead to the deaths of four people.

"At 11.50am, the ride was successfully shut down, engineering attended, reset the pumps and operating continued as per normal".

There had also been a series of previous breakdowns in 2001, 2004 and 2005 on the Thunder River Rapids Ride, the inquest heard.

The incident was disturbingly similar to the one that resulted in the four deaths in 2016 when the water pump stopped working, causing water levels to drop below the railing where the rafts Saturday.

The four died instantly when their water ride overturned, crushing them.

Detective Sgt Brown said the button was "totally unmarked" and a ride operator was told "not to worry about that button no one uses it".

New Zealander Cindy Low, Kate Goodchild, her brother Luke Dorsett and his partner Roozi Araghi lost their lives in the tragedy on the Gold Coast, Queensland in October 2016.

The counsel assisting the inquiry, Ken Fleming QC, said, "the tragedy of this event has been felt Australia-wide".

Dreamworld suffered steep falls in visitor numbers following the fatal accident and the park's subsequent 45-day shutdown. Crowds at Dreamworld estimated to have dropped by as much as 30 per cent.

A coroner's inquest into the tragedy gets underway today.

Final evidence submissions were to be made by June 8.
