A similar incident occurred in Houston last December, when a gay couple claimed an Uber driver dropped them off at the side of a freeway after they kissed in his vehicle.

A same-sex couple claim they were kicked out of an Uber by its driver because they were kissing.

Once over the bridge, Iovine said the driver suddenly pulled over and told the women to get out of the vehicle.

Video footage shows the moment the man informs the pair that kissing in the back of the vehicle is illegal.

Iovine said her reaction to the ordeal quickly went from shock to anger.

The spokesperson said that both the rider and the driver reported the incident.

El Boutari added that he would have acted similarly if it had been a straight couple, though he admitted that he has "less tolerance" for same-sex couples.

"Uber does not tolerate any form of discrimination, and we have reached out to the rider regarding her experience", an Uber spokesperson told Newsweek in a statement. "We are investigating and will take appropriate action".

According to Ms Pichl, Ms Iovine also filed a complaint with the city's Human Rights Commission in connection to the incident which took place during Pride Month.
