India Welcomes Donald Trump-Kim Jong Un Summit

Trump and Kim Jong Un concluded an extraordinary summit Tuesday with the signing of the document, which the U.S. president described as "pretty comprehensive". The omission of the words "verifiable" and "irreversible" from the phrasing on denuclearization suggested North Korean resistance to Trump's requests.

About 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea, a legacy of the Korean War, which ended in 1953 in an armistice that left the two Koreas technically still at war.

The Trump-Kim summit, unthinkable just a few months ago, is yet more vindication of the Cold War doctrine of deterrence where the capacity and threat to inflict pain augments the force of diplomacy, and can prompt "rogue" regimes to display a strong survival instinct.

Colonel Rob Manning, another spokesperson, said: "We are going to be aligned with the president", while noting that the readiness of United States forces would remain "paramout". We also agreed to vigorous negotiations to implement the agreement as soon as possible, and he wants to do that.

"Trump is being played in a major way".

But, with the summit ending only with the signing of a statement of intent and offering no timetable for action, questions remained about whether the meeting has produced enough results to boost his worldwide image and domestic standing over the longer term.

Clinton reached an aid-for-disarmament deal in 1994 that halted North Korea's plutonium production for eight years, freezing what was then a very small atomic arsenal.

Abe reiterated Tokyo's willingness to hold its own summit meeting with Kim to negotiate first-hand the return of abductees. "It is also perfectly reasonable be skeptical of North Korea's intentions, given its history of broken agreements", Thornberry said in a prepared statement. Those include the 1994 Agreed Framework negotiated during the Clinton administration, which Trump specifically attacked during a post-summit press conference on Tuesday. A federal investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election also hangs over his presidency.

But Trump refused to endorse a communique at the G7 summit over the weekend that said participants were "guided by our shared values of freedom, democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights and our commitment to promote a rules-based worldwide order".

Mitchell Reiss, who served from 2003-2005 as the U.S. State Department's director of policy planning, said it is important to make such decisions hand-in-hand with South Korea.

Trump himself scoffed at the sceptics earlier on Tuesday.

He said Trump had "squandered United States prestige" by meeting with Kim.

But the last three presidents secured commitments from North Korea on denuclearisation that North Korea later reneged on.

"I want to bring our soldiers back home", Trump said, although he added that it's "not part of the equation right now". He also said he'd like to remove all 28,500 US troops stationed in the South, although he made clear this was an option for the future, not a part of current negotiations. -South Korea military drills, a key demand from Pyongyang.

But one stunning step already taken by Trump - the suspension of U.S. It is nearly on the scale of [former US President Richard] Nixon going to China in 1972.

-South Korean military drills - and wants to remove the 28,500 USA troops stationed in the South as a deterrent against North Korea. South Korea's President Moon Jae In, who has been front and centre in efforts to engage the North and Mr Kim himself, pledged complete cooperation.
